Mathieu Bélanger is an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at the Université de Sherbrooke, Director of research at the Centre de formation médicale du Nouveau-Brunswick, and Epidemiologist for the Vitalité Health Network. He has a research program aiming to develop a better understanding of how behaviours develop and change over time, particularly with regard to participation in physical activity. Specific aspects of the research include identifying determinants of behavioural change and investigating the effects of behaviour change on health outcomes, including the management of diabetes. He is the author of over 60 peer-reviewed manuscripts and has received nominations for young researcher awards from the International Society for Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity and from the New Brunswick Health Research Foundation. Over the past years, Mathieu has adopted a patient-oriented research approach to guide the work of his laboratory. Having seen the benefits of this approach for his research as well as for patients and the population, he is happy to work with Diabetes Action Canada to help develop training and mentoring opportunities for the next generation of diabetes researchers. His hope is that the next generation of diabetes researchers consider patient-oriented research as the only way to conduct research.
